Every file we create on our computers has its own set of attributes that describe it. These attributes are usually unique to each file type apart from quite common attributes like the created date and modified date.  

Why worry about these attributes?

  

These attributes come in handy when we are working on file system-based automation solutions. It provides an activity that can easily access and retrieve all the properties of any given file. This activity will not only provide the standard and common attributes but will also look for the extended attributes that are unique to each file type. For example, mp4 files have lots of unique attributes like bit rate, frame size, video length, directors, etc.

  

This activity pack provides all that information in a Dictionary,  format. The activity will look for every attribute of a given file type and validate whether those attributes have any defined values. The attributes that don’t have any defined value will be excluded from the output it generates. Every attribute that has a defined value will be added to a Dictionary type and will be returned to a user.

  

**Arguments**

*   Input: File path: Provide the file path of the file you need to extract metadata from.
*   Output: Extracted Data (Dictionary,): All the extracted metadata will be returned in this format. The attribute name will be described in the Key of the dictionary and its value will be under the value segment of the dictionary.

BOT user is often required to access different physical and network shared file paths for various file I/O operations, especially when working with MS Excel, CSV or PDF files. All such shared directories and sub-directories have access permissions defined through some Group Policy by the IT administrators. In lots of business requirements, the BOT process during its execution is required to access the file paths to read or write files from/to the source/destination address respectively. But in practice, it is mostly seen during BOT development or migration to Test/Production servers, the BOT processing fails when the file paths access permissions are not as expected.

  

The FilePathAccessValidator workflow is developed using a Windows PowerShell script. The inbuilt Invoke PowerShell activity of UiPath executes the PowerShell script to query Windows Folder objects to list user permission details.

It expects two file paths as inputs: 

*   one to read access permission details
*   other to write output summary in a CSV file.

Further, a username is provided as input to query in the CSV result set. Later, developers can read the permission details from the CSV file to tailor their needs to proceed further in the workflow. In the attached workflow, its usage is also illustrated with a hypothetical use case to query and print the user’s permission details in logs.

Handle the file path pre-validation need and the access permission from the beginning of a BOT development cycle.

This snippet is designed to group all files into different subfolders based on file extension. The folder path is provided by the user. This workflow accepts the following **input arguments:**

*   in\_strOptionByUser (String) - represents the value to decide whether the bot should start or not.
*   in\_strUserInputFolderPath (String) - represents the folder path to organize the files.
*   in\_strUserInput (String) – represents the selected option (out of 3 options – Create new folder, Add in existing folder, Keep in Miscellaneous), chosen by the user if file type is unknown.

This workflow can be used to organize any given folder. It comes preloaded with the essential file types and folder structure. The file types defined in the Config file are:

*   **Documents:**

         o Compressed - .zip

         o Pdf – .pdf

         o Excel\_WordDoc – .doc, .docx, .csv, .xls, .xlsx

*   **Photos** - .png, .jpg, .bmp, .jpeg
*   **Videos** - .mp4
*   **Music** - .mp3
*   **Application Setup** - .exe, .msi
*   **Miscellaneous**

It asks the user to select the folder he/she wants to organize, loops all the files present in the folder, checks the extension of each file and moves it into the respective subfolder. More file types can be pre-defined in the Config file just by adding a row and entering the details ‘File extension’ and ‘Folder Name’. For any file which has an unknown extension, it gives the user the three options below:

*   **Create a new folder** – Creates a new subfolder with the name entered by the user and moves the file to that subfolder. It also adds this file-folder mapping into the Config file and moves all the files with this extension to the required subfolder.
*   **Add in existing folder** – Gives a drop-down option to the user and moves the file to the chosen subfolder. It also adds this file-folder mapping into the Config file and moves all the files with this extension to the required subfolder.
*   **Keep in miscellaneous** – Moves the file to the miscellaneous subfolder.

This workflow also gives the user the option to move all the personal files to the personal subfolder if the ‘Username’ is filled in the Config file. The bot will check the name of each file and if it has ‘Username’ in it, it will create a sub-folder named “Username” and moves the file into it.

Attended bot to organize files in a folder into different subfolders based on extension. For unknown file types, option appears to create a new, add in existing or move to Miscellaneous sub-folder.

**LockFolder** allows us to lock a folder access until we decide that it is safe to unlock it.

**UnLockFolder** allows us to unlock a folder that was previously locked.

This action can be useful in order to protect main data during the processing of the copy files

! Note: the default UiPath Studio activity for "Delete file" is able to perform the deletion of a file from inside the locked folder as long as you provide the full path and the correct name of the file.

The activity allows you to lock and unlock a certain folder

LockFolder allows you to lock the access to a folder until decided that it is safe to unlock it. UnLockFolder allows you to unlock a folder that was previously locked.

  

This action can be useful in order to protect main data during the processing of the copy files, as well as in other scenarios, like:

*   **Protecting sensitive data:** prevent unauthorized access to a folder containing sensitive data, such as financial records, personal information, confidential business documents etc.
*   **Ensuring data integrity:** prevent any accidental modifications or deletions of files in a folder during a critical process, such as a backup or system update. 
*   **Collaborative work:** prevent accidental changes to files in a shared folder while multiple people are working on them simultaneously. This can help prevent version conflicts and ensure that everyone is working with the most up-to-date files.
